Wondering how to cope with the candy consumption during Halloween?
Well, HAVE NO FEAR! THE GREAT PUMPKIN IS HERE!!

Thanks to an ingenious BEDROK Mom a few years ago, my boys have been enjoying yearly visits from The Great Pumpkin the morning after Halloween.
Every year, my boys get to either pick out a costume or make a homemade costume with Mommy and Daddy. We carve pumpkins and make our own treats to enjoy. Then we go trick or treating with friends and neighbors just like everyone else so that they can join in on the excitement as well.
When we get home, they are allowed to pick out all of the creepy spider rings, stickers, pencils, toothbrushes and other goodies. Then we stick the candy in bag and leave it on the porch for The Great Pumpkin to snatch up in exchange for a small, inexpensive very much wanted toy.
We have always given our boys the option to either keep the candy that will make them feel icky afterwards OR offer the candy to The Great Pumpkin and get to receive a new exciting toy. Lucky for me, they have always enthusiastically chosen the visit from The Great Pumpkin!
Somethings to keep in mind should you decide to do this with your family this Halloween:
1 - The Great Pumpkin does not have elves like Santa has so he has no one helping him make toys so it has to be affordable.
2 - Since he eats so much candy, he has licorice for arms & legs so he simply does not have the energy to lift up huge, heavy toys.
3 - Since he loves sugar & candy so much, he tends to be a bit grumpy so he's not really open to wish lists and phone calls. (Unlike Santa, I haven't a clue where I could reach him!)
4 - Lastly, I HEARD from another Mom that last year, her son decided to eat just a few pieces of candy from his loot. He then placed his bag of candy on the porch just like we do. Wouldn't you know it? When he went to see what toy he received the next morning, he found his bag of candy in the same exact spot that he had left it the night before! We ASSUME that The Great Pumpkin didn't want that bag of candy because some candy was missing out of it. The boy couldn't recall how many pieces he had eaten the night before and was so disappointed that he missed out on a toy that he swore to never eat even a single piece of candy from his Halloween bag again!
Some personal tidbits I'd like to add...
Our older son, Randy who is 8yrs old this year apparently was thinking about The Great Pumpkin because he came up to tell me that he felt bad that The Great Pumpkin eats so unhealthy and asked if we can make him his own jar of Belly Veggies and YCK! Our little one, Ethan who is 5yrs old then chimed in to agree that he really needs it YCK badly since he eats so much candy, it MUST be why his teeth are always missing!

HAPPY HALLOWEEN!!

~LEAD, TOXINS and CHEMICALS? OH MY!~
FACE PAINTING your little super hero, army tanker or lady bug? Have fun with it but first take Dr. Leonard Smith's advice and be certain that your store bought face paint doesn't contain lead, nickel or any other ghastly things you don't want on (or IN) your child's skin and body:

OR take EWG's advice and make your own:
Face Paint and Halloween Makeup
To avoid heavy metals and other potentially harmful unknown ingredients in traditional Halloween face paint, try making your own using food-based ingredients. Remember, foods can cause allergies in some kids: always test your concoctions on a small patch of skin and read up on natural food colorings before sending your little ghouls out for a night of painted fun. And don’t forget that some foods can stain skin and clothes.
Face Paint Made with Natural Food Coloring
Natural food coloring is available at health food stores and typically derived from foods and spices. We recommend reading up about natural food colorings and potential allergies first. Do not substitute conventional food coloring, which may contain synthetic chemical ingredients.
Ingredients:
-Base of safe, unscented lotion (search Skin Deep for safe options) OR pure cocoa butter (available at health food stores) OR safe, fluoride-free toothpaste (search Skin Deep; avoid mint flavors, as they can make skin tingly)
-Natural food coloring (see note above)
Instructions:
Mix a few drops of natural food coloring into the base ingredient of your choice. Test on a small patch of skin before applying to face or body.
Face Paint Made with Food
Make sure young children understand they can’t eat these paints unless you make them without the base. Test a small patch of skin first to make sure your child isn’t allergic to the food you’re using.
Ingredients:
-Base of safe, unscented lotion (search Skin Deep for safe options) OR pure cocoa butter (available at health food stores) OR safe, fluoride-free toothpaste (search Skin Deep; avoid mint flavors, as they can make skin tingly)
-Turmeric, raspberries, blackberries, blueberries, beets, avocado, spirulina, cocoa, chocolate sauce, squid ink or other colorful foods, juices, herbs and spices
Instructions:
Yellow: Add 1/4 tsp. and a large pinch of stale turmeric to base.
Pink: Using a sieve, mash the juice from 3 fresh or thawed frozen raspberries, blackberries or beets directly into the base. Or, use a deeply colored berry juice or puree.
Mint green: With a fork, mash 1/4 of a small avocado until creamy. Mix this into your base.
Emerald green: Add small amount spirulina or bright green chlorophyll to base.
Purple: Using a sieve, mash the juice from several fresh or frozen blueberries into the base. Or, use blueberry juice.
Brown: Add cocoa powder or chocolate sauce to base.
Black: Use a small amount of squid ink in base for true black.
White: Mix powdered sugar and water.
